Just a few short months ago, Hordak: The Evil Ruler of Despondos joined us as we reviewed Spy Monkey Creations' factory-constructed set of interchangeable weapons in the very Horde-ish "Bloodlust" color scheme. The weapons are constructed from many pieces (that happen to be Glyos-compatible) for easy customization. Now, Spy Monkey has released even more sets utilizing various finishes and paint schemes, so join us as we take a closer look at the three latest weapon sets to see if they're ready for battle!
The 3 sets come bagged like before with the visage of the patch-wearing monkey emblazoned on the label. Each set not only includes the base weapons, but also a few extra pieces to add some variety to your builds.
All three sets are constructed from very rigid and tough plastics which leave no worry about floppy swords and the like. On the downside, it's sometimes incredibly hard to get the smaller pieces apart once you have them locked in. Funny how this is the opposite problem we normally run into with toys. Each set, as you can see, is made up of 42 parts each and begin as 5 different weapons upon opening the package. Of course, once you start modifying these things, there's no limit to the destructive power your action figures can unleash. In our previous Spy Monkey Review, we did a few builds, and since our imagination is as stagnant as ever, we're just going to show a few of the basic weapons from the sets without too much razzamatazz added in. Spy Monkey Armory Solid State Series - White - (white ABS, white PVC) - $15
These sets are 5 bucks cheaper thanks to their plain color scheme (white this time) and are made with toy customizers in mind. while we'll eventually paint these up, the white fits pretty well with Icarius and Battle Armor Faker.
Spy Monkey Armory Metal Series - Shining Gold - (gold chrome ABS & clear colorless PVC) - $20
"Clearly" the vac-metal and translucent pieces in the Shining Gold assortment match up flawlessly with Hurricane Hordak. If you couple the black pieces, from the previous Bloodlust set we reviewed, with the gold from this one-- Hordak would be looking nigh unstoppable and might even cause some of his haters to rethink not buying this figure.
Conan Vikor likes to pillage and loooooves nice weapons! what better way to push that point home than by giving him a sword and shield fit for a king?! The sword handle being made of the vac-metal gives us pause since it could very well begin to scratch and wear quicker than the other pieces, but so far it hasn't been a problem. Might be something to keep in mind, though. Spy Monkey Armory Series 1.5 - Toxic Glow - (glow ABS and glow PVC w/ aqua paint ops) - $20
These weapons have the same feel as the others, but are constructed from light-reactive plastic.
Simply get these things in the dark and they glow incredibly bright. The best part is that all pieces in the set glow this brightly so none of your builds will look off with faded pieces.
As you can see by the head of the axe, green paint has also been applied to some of the rivets to break up the plain look. It is still visible during the glow effect which adds to the coolness and makes us wonder what something like a blackwash might bring out. Maybe we should order another set of these...
Overall, these new weapon sets from Spy Monkey are just as high-quality as the last ones, but with even more options when it comes to paint and finish. It's been rumored that some new weapon styles are coming down the pike, and we can't wait to see what they have in store!
