Today's Google Doodle honors the "father of the zipper," Gideon Sundback with a supremely clever trick.

According to The Inventor Hall of Fame, between 1906 and 1914, Sunback worked to improve what eventually became the modern zipper by "[increasing] the number of fastening elements from four to ten per inch, creating small teeth. He faced two rows of teeth opposite each other and added a slider to pull them together."

Zippers were polarized when they became the go-to fastening device during World War I, being used on different types of shoes, clothes and carrying devices.

The term "zipper" was coined by industrialist B. F. Goodrich.

So today, to honor Sundback's important addition to the human race, let us all collectively check our flies.
